who we are today
The Stable is an active group of Christian who have a connection with High Barnet in North London. We are a mix of age, background and ethnicity. All people are equal in God’s sight regardless of where we come from, and all are equally welcome.
a missional church
Our mission is to share the love of God with everyone we meet. In doing so we are continuing Jesus’ mission on earth; to preach the good news of the gospel, to make disciples, and to share God’s love by demonstrating compassion for the poor in practical ways.
Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19–20a NIVUK)
“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. Our history
In 1894 the Plymouth Brethren built our building in Salisbury Road, known as Salisbury Chapel, because of its location. The current expression of church, The Stable, was founded in 1990 as an alternative style of community church with a more contemporary form of worship than that being offered at the time by larger and more traditional churches in our area.
Perhaps as a result, The Stable was known to some as ‘the church for people who don’t go to church’, though it was probably more the case that it was for people who weren’t at home in more traditional environments. Whilst some things have inevitably changed over the years, our foundations have not: led and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are in the business of bringing the hope of the Gospel and, where we are able, practical support to those we meet day-by-day.
